Grace’s Irish Bar supports Celtic FC Foundation

Grace’s Irish Bar is proud to be supporting the Celtic FC Foundation’s initiative with Mary’s Meals in Africa.

The foundation is looking to build kitchens across schools in Zambia to promote healthy learning. For this to be successful and effective, they were looking for sponsorship and here at Grace’s Sports Bar, we were more than happy to be apart of this great project and have donated £5,000 to the cause.

A little more about the project…

If you look at the number of children enrolled and the annual feeding cost below – the startling fact is that the cost to feed one child for an entire school year, through one of Mary’s Meals kitchens, including the 67 Kitchens, is £13.90

Mwita Primary School, Chipangali District, Zambia

School enrolment                    692

Annual Feeding Cost              £9,618.80

Mary’s Meals have produced a maize and soya porridge, fortified with essential vitamins and minerals.  It is cheap to produce and the nutrients it provides allows children to make the most of their time in the classroom.

These life-changing meals attract hungry children into the classroom. The food fills their empty bellies so they have the energy and opportunity to learn, giving them the chance of a brighter future. The meals also support families struggling to feed their children while boosting the country’s wider economy.

Mary’s Meals school feeding programmes are owned and run by community volunteers in the countries where Mary’s Meals provide food. For example, there are over 80,000 volunteers in Malawi who take turns to prepare, cook and serve the daily meal in each school.

School feeding committees – made up of parents, teachers and volunteers – are crucial to Mary Meals work and one of the first things to be established in any new area receiving Mary’s Meals. Mary Meal’s monitors work closely with these committees. They regularly visit schools to ensure the precious ingredients they provide are cooked and served correctly and to offer training and encouragement to the community volunteers.

Wherever possible, they serve locally produced food. This supports the local community and its farmers as well as the wider economy.

Research has proven that school feeding has a range of positive impacts, since children who are not suffering from hunger are able to make the most of their education.

We’re looking forward to work alongside the Celtic FC Foundation and Mary Meal’s going forward.

Thanks again for your continued support,

Grace’s Sports Bar!
